Genevieve Artadi was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. She grew up in a musical family; her parents performed together in original rock and pop cover bands. Genevieve was inspired by the music around her, writing songs occasionally and singing all the time. Around the time she turned 17, she became the lead singer in a trip hop band formerly called Sample 208. Still, the thought of studying music seriously never crossed her mind until she attended Santa Monica College, where she took several theory courses and joined the vocal jazz ensemble under the direction of Cindy Bourquin.
Genevieve transferred to California State University Northridge in pursuit of a degree in jazz studies, which at the time was not being offered to vocalists. She involved herself in the jazz program as much as she could, taking every class offered to jazz majors, studying privately with Matt Falker, and singing in the vocal jazz ensemble, even when there was no director and student Colleen Keene took the lead. Fortunately her persistence paid off and she obtained a Bachelor of Music degree in jazz studies. While at CSUN, Genevieve had the honor of performing twice in the California Institute for the Preservation of Jazz All-State Vocal Jazz Ensemble (2004 and 2006). She also won the Outstanding Vocalist Award at the Reno Jazz Festival in Spring of 2006.
Currently, Genevieve is attending California State University Long Beach, where she is working toward a Master of Music degree in Jazz Studies. She is studying privately with Christine Guter and singing in the vocal jazz ensemble, Pacific Standard Time. During her first semester at CSULB, Genevieve had the opportunity to perform with a student combo on the KKJZ program “The Ones to Watch.” She will also be joining the CSULB Concert Jazz Orchestra in several performances this year, including the Monterey Jazz Festival. Outside-of-school projects in which Genevieve is involved are her jazz sextet The Lost Combo and the same band she joined while in high school, now called Pollyn. Pollyn will appear in an upcoming issue of Urb Magazine as part of an annual feature entitled “Urb™s Next 100.” Genevieve hopes to maintain a successful career as an artist and educator. http://www.myspace.com/thelostcombohttp://www.myspace.com/thelostcombohttp://www.myspace.com/pollynshapeimage_3_link_0shapeimage_3_link_1shapeimage_3_link_2
